Second Position Scales

So many violinists are so focused on working up the instrument and shifting to the upper stratospheres that many times working across the instrument can be easily under nourished.

Spending time working across the instrument in specific positions creates a wonderful foundation for finger relationships and muscle memory resulting in excellent intonation.

Now who doesn’t want excellent intonation right?

Every position working across the instrument has specific keys and scales that are comfortable in that position.

In this post we will be focusing on the comfortable scales and keys in Second Position.

Possible Scales in Second Position

  • B Flat Major/minor

    B FLAT MAJOR
    2 Flats: B Flat and E Flat

    B FLAT MINOR
    5 Flats: B Flat, E Flat, A Flat, D Flat, G Flat

  • B Major/minor

    B Major
    5 Sharps: F#, C#, G#, D#, A#

    B minor
    2 Sharps: F# and C#

  • C Major/minor

    C Major
    No Flats or Sharps

    c minor
    3 Flats: B Flat, E Flat and A Flat

  • C SHARP MAJOR/minor

    C Sharp Major
    7 Sharps: F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B#

    C Sharp minor
    4 Sharps: F#, C#, G#, D#

  • D MAJOR/minor

With an extended fourth finger on the E String.

    D Major
    2 Sharps: F# and C#

    D minor
    1 Flat: B Flat

As an orchestral violinist you can keep the above information tucked away in a mental file so that when you come across symphonies is let’s say C Major, you will know that it is more than likely some notey passages may be a bit comfortable in second position; for example, Bizet’s Symphony in C, lots of second position opportunities.
