Wohlfahrt Christmas Fantasia, Op. 83 – Two Violins & Piano
The Wohlfahrt Christmas Fantasia Op 83 is a festive chamber work that weaves beloved Christmas melodies into a warm and engaging setting for two violins and piano.
While many violinists know Wohlfahrt primarily through his famous études, this charming fantasia reveals another side of his writing — one that is lyrical, collaborative, and deeply rooted in the tradition of Christmas music.
In this performance, Heather Kaye Broadbent performs all parts, creating a unified chamber interpretation of the complete work.

A Pleasant Discovery While Creating Winter Light
I first encountered this piece while compiling repertoire for Winter Light, a seasonal musical companion created for violinists who want to approach Christmas music with warmth and musical presence.
Like many violinists, I studied the Wohlfahrt Etudes when I was in middle school. They are part of the standard technical foundation for developing violinists.
Yet somehow, I do not remember ever encountering this Christmas Fantasia before.
Discovering it while exploring repertoire for Winter Light felt like finding a hidden musical gem tucked quietly inside the violin literature.
It was also a genuine pleasure to bring the piece to life by recording each part and then playing along with those recordings to create the full chamber texture. Sitting down with the violin and hearing the other parts unfold around me was unexpectedly joyful. The process simply lit my soul up.
The piece brings together familiar Christmas melodies in a way that feels both festive and intimate. The writing for two violins allows the voices to interact gently, supported by the piano accompaniment.
For that reason, it felt like a natural addition to the Winter Light repertoire collection.
It is my pleasure to bring this charming work out of the classical repertoire closet and share it with violinists who may not yet have encountered it.
