Private Violin Study for Serious Adult Violinists
A lineage-based approach to technique, tone, and artistic freedom.
Online violin lessons for adults at the Broadbent School of Violin Artistry are designed for dedicated violinists who sense something essential is missing in their training.
Many adult players eventually reach a point where progress slows and tension increases. Familiar problems with tone, intonation, or coordination begin to repeat themselves.
In many cases the issue is not effort. The deeper cause is that foundational work was never fully organized or integrated.
This approach invites curiosity and openness. Long-held habits sometimes need to be examined carefully.
Students are never treated as “broken.” However, meaningful progress requires the willingness to listen, experiment, and learn.
For the right violinist, the missing piece is often a coherent technical approach that connects sound, body, and musical intention.
• You are an adult violinist or teacher who knows there are gaps in your education
• You have studied repertoire but lack clarity in fundamental technique
• Your practice is consistent, yet progress feels fragile or unreliable
• Physical tension or fatigue appears during playing
• You want technique that supports musical expression
• Thoughtful pedagogy and structure matter to you
• You sense something essential is missing in your training
The Broadbent School of Violin Artistry stands within a clear pedagogical lineage.
Leopold Auer — Technical clarity in service of musical truth
Eugène Ysaÿe — Individuality, freedom, and tone as voice
Here that lineage appears not as ideology, but as daily practice.
Technique always serves sound.
Discipline supports artistry rather than suppressing it.
The violinist remains a thoughtful, intelligent human being.
Private sessions are precise, focused, and highly individualized.
During each lesson I quickly identify what limits the instrument’s response. The visible problem is often only the surface. Deeper causes usually come from imbalances between body, left hand, and bow arm.
Our work begins by building balance in three essential areas:
• The balance of the body
• The balance of the left hand
• The balance of the right hand
These online violin lessons for adults help reorganize technique so playing can function naturally and reliably.
• Tone production and bow clarity
• Whole-body posture and balance
• Franco-Belgian bow hold and right-hand coordination
• Efficient left-hand organization
• Intonation awareness
• Shifting and position security
• Vibrato freedom
• Practice structure and nervous-system integration
The goal is not to “fix” you. The goal is to organize your playing so it works reliably, sustainably, and musically.
I teach the Franco-Belgian bow hold with attention to flexibility, weight transfer, and natural movement.
Technical work follows ergonomic principles. The goal is always to cooperate with the body rather than force it.
When movement becomes efficient, sound production becomes clearer, more reliable, and far less physically stressful.
Years of unnecessary tension are common among adult violinists.
This approach focuses on integrated technique. Movement becomes organized in ways that respect the body, support the nervous system, and allow tone to develop naturally.
Students frequently notice improved clarity and control. Many also experience relief from long-standing fatigue or discomfort.
This work does not rely on shortcuts. Instead it develops playing that is intelligent, embodied, and sustainable.
If this approach resonates, the best first step is a private session.
For the first lesson please bring:
• One scale appropriate to your level (two or three octaves)
• Three to five minutes of a piece you enjoy
During that session we clarify priorities and outline the most helpful direction for your practice.
All sessions take place online via Zoom.
Private students receive:
• A secure lesson link
• Written session notes in a shared Google document
• Relevant resources and references between lessons
Online study often provides surprising depth. Many violinists find the format offers more clarity and continuity than traditional in-person lessons.
Private lessons focus on demonstration, listening, and careful refinement of technique.
When exercises, études, or repertoire are recommended, students obtain their own copies unless noted otherwise. Public-domain material is used whenever appropriate.
Shared files are organized through Dropbox. Written lesson notes remain available in a shared document so you always know what to practice next.
Many violinists — including adult learners, teachers, and professional players — have studied privately at the Broadbent School of Violin Artistry.
Most students begin with a single introductory session to clarify goals and establish a focused practice strategy.
These online violin lessons for adults are designed to give you clarity, structure, and confidence in your playing.
