The Broadbent School of Violin Artistry
The Broadbent School of Violin Artistry was created as a home for the body of teaching work Heather has developed over decades of performing and teaching.
Rather than offering scattered tutorials, the School organizes violin study into clear areas such as:
• Foundations
• Tone
• Listening & Intonation
• Technique
• Positions
• Repertoire
• Practice
• Musicality
• Seasonal studies
This structure allows violinists to approach their development with clarity, patience, and thoughtful coordination between technique and musical expression.
The goal is not simply to play more notes, but to build reliable technique and expressive understanding that supports a lifelong relationship with music.
A Life Shaped by the Violin
Heather grew up in Wisconsin in a musical environment that nurtured curiosity, discipline, and artistic exploration.
She received her Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the University of Colorado Boulder and later performed professionally in both the United States and Europe.
Earlier in her career she held leadership positions in orchestras in the greater Chicago–Milwaukee region, and she later continued performing and teaching in Bulgaria, including appearances with the Gabrovo Chamber Orchestra and the Yambol Chamber Orchestra.
These experiences performing internationally introduced her to diverse musical communities and perspectives that continue to shape her teaching today.
Teaching Philosophy
Heather’s teaching philosophy centers on three principles.
Humane Technique
Violin technique should support the body rather than fight against it. Efficient, balanced movement allows violinists to play with freedom and reliability.
Musical Understanding
Technique becomes meaningful when it serves musical expression. Studying repertoire thoughtfully helps violinists develop phrasing, listening, and musical awareness.
Thoughtful Practice
Lasting progress comes from organized, intentional practice. Rather than relying on shortcuts, violinists develop confidence through clear coordination between the bow, left hand, rhythm, and structure of the music.
Her teaching emphasizes clarity, patience, and careful listening as the foundation of musical growth.
Working with Violinists Around the World
Heather began teaching violin in 2001 and later expanded her work online, allowing violinists around the world to study with her methods.
Today her work includes:
• a widely read violin education blog
• a large YouTube teaching channel
• guided repertoire and technique courses
• private online violin lessons
• collaborative study environments within the Broadbent School
Her students have gone on to:
• win competition awards
• serve as concertmasters in youth and regional orchestras
• perform in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall
Many of the violinists she works with today are returning adult players who studied earlier in life and are rediscovering the violin with renewed curiosity and maturity.
A Holistic Approach to the Violin
Heather believes the violin journey is not only technical but deeply personal.
Studying the violin invites musicians to develop:
• patience
• attentive listening
• self-awareness
• creative expression
A thriving violin journey requires both discipline and balance. Technique develops most naturally when violinists cultivate curiosity, self-acceptance, and a genuine love for the music they are studying.
Through her work, Heather encourages violinists to build a lifelong relationship with their instrument — one that supports both artistic growth and personal discovery.
