TAKE A LOOK INSIDE…
EXCERPT FROM VOLUME 3
At the beginning of every volume of Fourth Finger Fitness method E-Book, the focus is on the fourth finger itself, playing consistently, rounded and strong…
Each exercise in the 105 page Volume 1 (Volumes 2 and 3 are 149 pages) gets progressively more difficult combining the fourth finger individually with every other finger, stressing finger relationships, finger distance and encouraging muscle memory between fingers with practice.
Every exercise focuses on a specific interval occurring between the fourth finger and other fingers with 2 pages of “fitness” for each finger combination consisting of varying rhythms.
Not only does Fourth Finger Fitness cover fourth finger relationships on one string it emphasizes fourth finger practice for string crossings as well.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…
Hi, I’m Heather Broadbent, American violinist currently concertizing in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. Before coming to Bulgaria, I freelanced with thirty plus orchestras and held permanent positions with five orchestras in the greater Chicago area spanning three states – Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. All the while continuing my education with concert violinist, Rachel Barton Pine, teaching 15- 30 students and performing chamber recitals.
In 2011, At the height of all of the above, I broke my left wrist while on vacation in Mexico. The break wasn’t initially found and I continued to perform on the broken wrist for two months before being casted. Needless to say, the rehab process was more excruciating than the actual break and the finger that was the most affected was my fourth finger.
That break was the inspiration for “Fourth Finger Fitness.” I knew I wasn’t the only violinist in the world with a weak finger, heck, my University professor avoided the fourth finger like the plague. I created these exercises specifically to strengthen the fourth finger and to allow violinists to investigate finger relationships with the fourth finger.
“Fourth Finger Fitness” includes exercises for almost every fourth finger possibility, fourth finger combinations and extensions.
If practiced mindfully with correct posture and a very discerning ear listening to every pitch played, these exercises WILL transform your fourth finger and improve overall intonation.
“Fourth Finger Fitness” will also improve your reading skills in the corresponding positions (if there is room for improvement.)
HOW TO USE FOURTH FINGER FITNESS
After purchasing Fourth Finger Fitness, you have the option of downloading and/or printing the book. It is completely your choice if you wish to print the book or if you wish to read from your computer screen or tablet.
The exercises in this book are pretty intense. I would suggest no more than 10 minutes a day to get started. You may find that your fourth finger may get tired after 5 minutes.
No matter.
Time yourself and stop when you are tired. It is very important for all violinists to listen to their body and not to push yourself otherwise damage can be done.
If you can only do 5 minutes, stay at 5 minutes and then slowly increase your time daily always listening to your body.

“Thank you so much for the Fourth Finger Fitness exercises!! As a beginner violinist it is not easy to start using the fourth finger. But these exercises gave me more confidence to use the fourth finger. Using the fourth finger goes almost automatically now. After going through your book, my fourth finger is as strong as my other fingers. The exercises help to strengthen the fourth finger, to have good intonation and to use it with a nice curve.
It’s great to really focus on the use of the fourth finger instead of only using it sporadically. And the exercises also help to achieve good intonation with the other fingers. So it’s a great workout to have good intonation for each finger!
It took me almost five months to study the entire book. And now I’ll just start over because I feel I really need it to progress more! I think Fourth Finger Fitness will stay with me during my entire violin journey!”

“Heather started me on Fourth Finger Fitness in third position February 15, 2016. This was a big step for me! This step has improved my understanding of the violin 10 fold! I work on it everyday. My note recognition and finger placement has improved greatly. I am now reading and playing Etude in the key of C Major and the finger pattern exercises in third position just from this one exercise. Thank you Heather.”

“I enjoy playing through the Fourth Finger Fitness books. Not only do they help me with technique, they boost my mood too. I feel so peaceful playing through these exercises. I have seen tremendous progress in my 4th finger with Fourth Finger Fitness. It has more strength and is way more curved when I’m playing through technique books, pieces, or anything. The muscle memory that my fourth finger has maintained permanently because of the Fourth Finger Fitness books is amazing. Heather Broadbent is an amazing teacher and exceptional violinist. Her technique books match that expertise. I highly recommend these books and any book that Heather composes.
