WHAT ARE DOUBLE STOPS?
Double stops are when two strings are played at the same time. When studying double stops doesn’t just stop at two strings but expands into triple stops – three strings being played at once and quadruple stops – four strings played at once (or to be more precise, as quickly as possible one after the other.) When studying double stops on the violin it is normal to include these other multi string studies as well. Triple stops and quadruple stops will also be discussed in the Divine Double Stop challenge.
WHY PLAY DOUBLE STOPS?
Double Stops (all multi-string studies) allows violinists to be their own accompaniment as a solo instrument. Multi string playing allows for more layers in soloistic playing. It is a must know technique for all violinists.
